If you're getting married in Los Angeles County, you’ll need to bring the right ID to apply for your marriage license.

What ID Do You Need for a Marriage License?

Accepted IDs:

All IDs must be valid and not expired. Accepted forms of identification include:

  • Driver’s License (any U.S. state)

  • State ID Card (any U.S. state)

  • U.S. Passport or Passport Card

  • Passport from any other country
    (If it’s not in English, bring a notarized English translation. Expired passports are not accepted—even if the visa is valid.)

  • Military ID or Military Dependent ID

  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)

  • Certificate of Naturalization

  • Matricula Consular ID

    • No birth certificate needed if from: Mexico, Argentina, Peru, or Korea

    • All other countries: birth certificate must be translated, notarized, and have an apostille

  • Mexican National Electoral Card

  • Identification Card issued by another country’s government
    (May require a birth certificate and translation if not in English)

IDs That Are Not Accepted:

These documents cannot be used for your marriage license:

  • Social Security Card

  • Employment Authorization Card (EAD)

  • Border Crossing Card

  • B1/B2 Tourist Visa

  • Expired Passport (even with valid visa)
